Domestic service – the only option for single working-class girls.

Between 1918 and 1939 domestic service was by far the largest employer of single women in Wales (35% by 1939). The Ministry of labour set up training courses in the regions, including Wales, to supply domestic servants to more prosperous areas of England. In 1929, domestic servants earned as little as 35p a week, but single girls had little choice – there was no work at home and they were a financial burden on their families
