Links: Economic Development of the Coal
Industry | Pay and Living
South Wales consists of both the Coalfield and the coastal strip. The
region has a distinctive history of medicine and health, which was brought
about by rapid industrial growth from the late nineteenth century and swift
economic decline in the aftermath of the First World War.
This page lists historical records for occupational and community health,
predominantly between 1890 and 1948, which are held at the
West Glamorgan
Archive Service and the
Swansea Central
Reference Library.
It was compiled by Dr Sara Knight, an honorary lecturer in the School of
Health Science at Swansea University, and generously funded by the
Barry Amiel and Norman Melburn Trust.
