| According to a press report of 1855, the married women of Llanrwst held a ‘mock court’ that looked into the behaviour of a notorious wife-beater – “At 7 o’clock in the evening a large crowd (mainly female) met on the square to witness the ceremony of burning the culprit in effigy”. |
