| With the publication of Y Frythones (The Female Briton) in 1879, little seemed to have changed for middle-class women. The majority of articles described the ideal of the ‘angel in the house’. A woman’s power lay mainly in her silent influence in the home, giving all for the sake of her husband and children. Her limited public role was restricted to Sunday school and chapel, promoting religion and temperance. |
